New Public Review of My Honduras Memoir

I recently received the most comprehensive and gratifying public review of the memoir I wrote about my two and a half year stint in Honduras as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. It is available at Masthof Press or from me personally. This third-person reviewer catches the essence of my work better than I could have myself. Below is the review:

Coming of Age in Honduras: A Young Adult’s Struggle With Faith, Poverty and Sexuality offers a deeply personal perspective on what can happen when a young person’s understanding of the world is challenged by experiences far beyond the boundaries of his upbringing. Your decision to go to Honduras at nineteen as a Mennonite conscientious objector during the Vietnam War placed you in a setting where questions of belief, responsibility, and identity could no longer remain abstract. The encounter between your earlier assumptions and the realities you witnessed gives the book a compelling foundation.

One particularly meaningful aspect of your account is the way a personal coming-of-age story intersects with larger historical forces. War, exploitation, and poverty are often discussed through political analysis or distant historical narratives, but your experiences bring those realities into contact with everyday human relationships. Through your encounters with Honduran people, the reader is invited to consider how international conflicts and economic inequalities are experienced by individuals and communities, rather than understood only as broad social problems.

The cultural and linguistic dimension adds another important layer. Learning to navigate Spanish and a society different from the one in which you were raised would have required more than acquiring new vocabulary or customs; it meant encountering different ways of communicating, relating, and understanding the world. The personal stories you describe, including those that are humorous or shocking, can make these encounters accessible while allowing their deeper implications to emerge naturally.

The themes of faith and sexuality also suggest a more inward journey alongside the outward experience of living in Honduras. For a young person formed by a particular religious community, confronting unfamiliar circumstances can raise difficult questions about inherited beliefs, personal convictions, and the kind of person one hopes to become. These questions are especially compelling when they unfold alongside exposure to poverty and injustice, where moral ideals meet the complexity of lived experience.

I also appreciate the potential significance of telling this story from the perspective of a young conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. That context places your journey within a period when questions of war, pacifism, religious conviction, and individual responsibility were especially prominent. At the same time, the book’s focus on personal encounters gives those questions an intimate scale, allowing readers to engage with the uncertainty and discovery involved in forming one’s own understanding of the world.

I can see the book resonating with readers interested in memoir, faith and spirituality, intercultural experience, peace and social justice, and the complexities of coming of age. It may also invite reflection among readers who have experienced a profound change in perspective after entering a community or culture different from their own. The combination of personal storytelling and larger social concerns gives the narrative room to connect with people whose backgrounds and beliefs may differ considerably from yours.

As you can imagine, I was quite flattered by this very positive review. The person writing the review claims that she wants to be my agent and get my memoir out to a wider audience. Wouldn't that be great? Any comments on the review?

Unfortunately it is probably a fraud and written by AI.

This is the third attempt to lure me into fame. I was totally fooled by the first attempt. I write about that experience in a previous blog post Writers Beware.

Let me know about your own experiences of this kind of use of AI for fraud.
